GPA Calculator

GPA is calculated by multiplying each course's grade points by its credit hours, summing all the results, then dividing by total credit hours. For example, an A (4.0) in a 3-credit course = 12 quality points. If you also have a B (3.0) in a 4-credit course = 12 quality points. Total: 24 ÷ 7 credits = 3.43 GPA.

The 4.0 scale is the standard grading system in the US. A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7, C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, C- = 1.7, D+ = 1.3, D = 1.0, F = 0.0. Some schools use a weighted scale where honors/AP classes can exceed 4.0.

A good GPA depends on your goals. For most purposes: 3.5-4.0 is excellent (Dean's List, top graduate schools), 3.0-3.49 is good (most graduate programs, competitive jobs), 2.5-2.99 is average, and below 2.0 may put you on academic probation. Top medical and law schools typically want 3.7+.

Semester GPA is your grade point average for a single semester. Cumulative GPA includes all semesters combined. To calculate cumulative GPA, you need the total quality points and total credit hours from all semesters. Our calculator can handle both.

It gets harder to change your GPA the more credits you have. For example, with 60 credits and a 3.0, getting a 4.0 in 15 more credits would raise it to only 3.2. The earlier you focus on your grades, the easier it is to maintain a high GPA. Retaking failed courses can also help at many schools.
