Tip Calculator

In the United States, 15–20% is the standard tipping range for sit-down restaurants. 15% is considered acceptable, 18% is average, and 20%+ is for great service. For exceptional service, 25% or more is appropriate.

For a 20% tip, move the decimal point one place left (that's 10%), then double it. For example, on a $45.00 bill: 10% = $4.50, doubled = $9.00 tip. For 15%, find 10% and add half of that.

Etiquette experts generally say tipping on the pre-tax amount is standard, though tipping on the total (post-tax) is also common and appreciated. The difference is usually small, so either approach is fine.
